DIAGNOSIS: Eating Disorders

TREATMENT: Group Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorder

BRIEF SUMMARY

  • Basic premise: Enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E) is based on the transdiagnostic theory of eating disorders, and so CBT-E treats eating disorder psychopathology generally. Foundational to CBT-E is the theory that eating disorder symptoms are maintained by dysfunctional evaluations of self-worth based on weight, shape, and eating (Fairburn, Cooper, & Shafran, 2003a). For some, the maintenance factors may include perfectionisms, low self esteem, low mood, and interpersonal problems. CBT-E targets eating disorder maintenance factors (Wade et al., 2017). Guidance for how to adapt CBT-E to a group setting is available, including how to work with a group to address eating disorder behaviors and cognitions (over evaluation of self based on weight and shape, dietary restraint) and other potential maintenance factors (low self esteem, perfectionism, low mood, interpersonal problems) (Fairburn, 2008).
