DIAGNOSIS: Eating Disorders

TREATMENT: Dialectical Behavior Group Therapy for Binge Eating Disorder

BRIEF SUMMARY

  • Basic premise: Originally designed to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has been adapted to treat Binge Eating Disorder in a group setting (Safer et al., 2017). DBT for BED emphasizes the connection between dysregulated emotion and dysregulated eating behaviors (Safer et al., 2010). DBT includes group training related to emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and relapse prevention. These skills, often taught in a group setting, help individuals accept their reality and prevent further suffering (Rahmani et al., 2018).
