DIAGNOSIS: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

TREATMENT: Cognitive Group Therapy For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

BRIEF SUMMARY

  • Basic premise: “Cognitive therapy with OCD as presented in the following is essentially based on cognitive therapy with depression and anxiety disorders. The general strategies are: firstly, to consider the intrusions as stimuli, secondly, to identify the distressing thoughts (negative automatic thoughts), thirdly, to challenge these automatic thoughts, and finally, to change the distressing thoughts into non-distressing thoughts. An important general cognitive technique used by the therapist to challenge the automatic thoughts is the Socratic dialogue. Patients are also instructed to monitor and challenge automatic thoughts in diaries” (van Oppen & Arntz, 1994).
