Giorgio A. Tasca, Ph.D.

.

The September 2024 issue of Group Dynamics will be a special issue on Evidence-Based Group Therapy. The co-editors, Gary Burlingame and Bernhard Strauss have gathered together 8 articles and two commentaries for this special issue from leading group treatment researchers and clinicians. The articles will focus on the most current evidence for the effectiveness of group therapy based on meta-analyses and systematic reviews. This special issue is the culmination of a project that has been over a decade in the making. Meta-analyses of group psychotherapy have unequivocally shown the effectiveness of group treatments for a variety of disorders. Each article will review the existing evidence, the quality of the evidence, and their practical implications for group practitioners. Many of the articles include clinical vignettes of evidence-based treatments and a discussion of equity, diversity, and inclusion in group treatment research. These articles will be the backbone of the Evidence-Based Group Therapy website that is hosted by Division 49 and co-sponsored with the American Group Psychotherapy Association. You can access the website at: https://evidencebasedgrouptherapy.org/. Among the articles are reviews of group treatments for Eating Disorders, Mood Disorders, Personality Disorders, Treatments for Children and Adolescents, Schizophrenia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Chronic Pain, and Substance Use Disorders. Researchers and practitioners who want to understand the evidence for group therapy and the practical implications of this evidence should read this special issue.
